Star Programme in schools
All teaching is multi-sensory and based on the Sounds Write synthetic phonics programme. Lessons are highly structured, focused and fun. We aim to give our pupils the confidence to ‘have a go’ and see themselves as successful learners.
We love reading and we want to share our pleasure in books.

Assessment Services
The Bloomfield Centre offers a range of diagnostic assessments for children and young adults with dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties.
We welcome enquiries and are always happy to discuss issues related to poor literacy and school related anxiety, prior to assessment bookings.
We accept referrals from parents, schools, health professionals and young adults (post 16 years).
Please note: An eye test is required, no more than one year before the assessment, to make sure there is no visual which might affect reading and writing.
• Children (7+ yrs): Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia/Spld + Full Report suitable for DSA applications (cost £550 per child)
A full diagnostic assessment with an in-depth report which will identify areas of strengths and weakness, provide a diagnosis of dyslexia where appropriate and make recommendations for support.
This report can be submitted as evidence of a specific learning difficulty (SpLD) to support applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) at university.
• 16+ yrs: Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia/Spld + Additional Evidence of ADHD and/or Dyspraxia + Full Report, suitable for DSA applications (cost £650 per student)
A full diagnostic assessment with additional assessments to identify ADHD and dyspraxia, with an in-depth report.
Professional guidelines for assessors mean that, where appropriate, these reports can provide a diagnosis of dyslexia as well as additional evidence of ADHD and dyspraxia.
This is not a medical diagnosis but can be used as evidence of a specific learning difficulty (Spld) when applying to Student Finance England for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) at university or when applying for a Workplace Needs Assessment (WNA).
• 7+ yrs: Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia with a Short Report (cost £300 per child)
A full diagnostic assessment with a shorter, more succinct report.
This is especially suitable for primary schools (for children aged 7 years and above), and lower secondary. The report focuses on the key areas of strength and difficulty, details the diagnosis where appropriate, and provides clear and comprehensive recommendations for busy classroom teachers, SENDCo’s and parents.
This report cannot be used for DSA applications for university.
• Dyslexia Screening Test: In school only (cost £100 per child)
Screening tests give an indication of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses and can help identify the likelihood of them having a specific learning difficulty (Spld) such as dyslexia. Screening tests do not provide a diagnosis and cannot be used as evidence of a SpLD. They can, however, suggest whether a diagnostic assessment would be beneficial.

Training
• Teaching Assistant Spelling and Vocabulary Intervention (STAR)
What is Star?
The STAR Intervention Programme is a highly effective one term (12 week) multi-sensory language and spelling programme, with a proven track record. Created for children who are struggling to keep up in the classroom, it aims to widen participant’s vocabulary and equip them with transferable spelling skills to use in all areas of the curriculum.
This programme is specifically aimed at pupils in years 4-6.
How is the programme delivered?
Within 4 x 35 minute sessions
A specialist teacher from the Bloomfield Centre comes into school for one afternoon a week to work with a TA/TAs and small groups of children identified by their class teachers as under-achieving in literacy. The TA is simultaneously trained to deliver and continue the programme as well as use the strategies throughout the school.
The programme focuses on target words taken from the National Statutory spelling lists. All training materials are provided and by the end of the term the TA will be fully equipped to continue the programme.
‘Having observed the positive impact of the spelling and vocabulary programme delivered by Jane, I plan to continue. The effective strategies employed and the evident enthusiasm of the students are compelling reasons to continue with the programme.’ (Senco Bellenden School)
Programme Outcomes
To date, the programme has been delivered in one Bromley and 6 Southwark schools, with outstandingly positive results. The children have enjoyed the sessions, benefitting from improved confidence and motivation as well as improved spelling and wider vocabularies.
Progress in spelling and comprehension is quantifiable – children are baseline tested on their ability to spell and understand the words at the start and end of term.
‘Thank you so so much Jane – these are really fabulous outcomes! How lucky we have been to have you share your expertise – we will be sure to reach increasing numbers of children with this fantastic approach.’ (Hayley, Assistant Head for Inclusion at Balgowan School
